User Survey & Statistics

Feedback comprises two ways of gathering user feedback data: directly through a user survey and indirectly through statistical analysis by collecting user's session data.

User Survey

At the end of a Saros session, the user is sometimes asked to participate in a User Survey. This happens when a user ends his/her first session and periodically after a certain number of sessions. This interval can be configured by the user. It is also possible to turn this request on and off.

Statistics

The statistical data about your Saros usage is gathered per session and submitted to us at the end of each session if you gave us your permission. You can review and change these settings at any time by opening the Eclipse preferences at Window -> Preferences -> Saros -> Feedback.

What data IS collected:

  • the number of sessions you started,
  • the duration your last session lasted,
  • which write permissions (write-access, read only-access) you had and for how long,
  • how many participants were in the session and for how long,
  • the number of characters you wrote in this session,
  • if you were the host of the session or not,
  • some general information (Eclipse version, Java version, Saros version, Operating system),
  • your current feedback settings (enabled/disabled, interval),
  • a random session ID, consisting of a random number,
  • a random user ID, consisting of a timestamp and a random number, and
  • the data throughput rate achieved during sync as KB/s.

What data is NOT collected:

  • your Jabber user name or password,
  • your IP address, or
  • the contents of any documents.

Using a Pseudonym

Since we treat your data anonymous, we have no way of identifying you unless you choose to be identifiable. This can be achieved by setting a pseudonym in the preferences (Windows -> Preferences -> Saros -> Feedback -> Identify me using this pseudonym). After you've set this pseudonym we can search for it in the set of statistical data. We created this possibility mainly for people collaborating with us and to ensure that our debugging does not distort our  statistical data on Distributed Pair Programming. Yet we can also use this to delete your statistical data should you ever wish for us to do so.
